Forthcoming Autumn/Winter 2026

Front cover of The Staph Aureus Experience™ by Alice van Rooyen. White title and five empty stars above the words ‘Do not recommend!’ on a grey background. Three colourful paper-collage Polaroids depict a patient with hospital clothing, a stylised infection, and medical supplies.

In 2025, I spent two months in hospital with disseminated Staphylococcus aureus infection and sepsis. This is an account of my illness, hospitalisation and recovery.

Five months after coming home, I began making a series of Polaroid-style collages to capture the texture of my time in hospital before the details were smoothed out or lost. The resulting collection is neither a chronological account, nor a conventional recovery narrative. The Polaroids are presented within the context of my medical record, but they capture the moments that remained significant to me after discharge, even though many of these were clinically inconsequential.

The finished book will be published on this page, available to read and download as a free PDF.
